In this image, the radio observations of neutral hydrogen have been rendered as a black-and-white ΓÇ£radio pictureΓÇ¥ (compare it with the galaxyΓÇÖs visible image, which is reproduced on the same scale). Note that the neutral hydrogen image is ΓÇ£thickerΓÇ¥ than the optical one. This shows that the neutral hydrogen gas extends ΓÇ£aboveΓÇ¥ the stellar disk of the galaxy, as is true for most spiral galaxies.
